About the Artist

Linda’s striking one-of-a-kind creations are strongly influenced by environmental issues and global concerns.  Her work will often incorporate a juxtaposition of “found objects” or organic components, in contrast to gold, fine silver and precious gemstones, to convey a message or tell a story.  Her “Spirits of the Rainforest,” for instance, address the mounting concerns facing fragile, dwindling rainforests. The “found objects” will be in abundance as we follow our artist through museums, flea markets, jewelry shops and in short, what we call our “treasure” cities of southern Spain.

Tour Details:

Depart from Málaga on the 23 of October

Flight Route:
  Arrive Madrid- Depart Málaga

Meals Included:  All breakfasts, one pic-nic, 2 dinners

Itinerary
Our adventure begins in the cosmopolitan city of Madrid and takes us to Andalucia, into the province of Málaga.    We’ll travel to different destinations in order to capture the essence of this country, which will no doubt inspire the artist to create beautiful jewelry and our evenings end in the quiet calm of our country manor house tucked away in the mountains.

Day 1  Arrive Madrid…We’ll meet you at your hotel at 2:00 pm today and after a brief presentation of the itinerary we will escort you to the Museo de Lazaro Galdiano. The eclectic personal art collection of José Lazaro Galdiano is displayed in what was his private mansion.  Here you will see spectacular antique ivory carvings, enamels of amazing details and intricacy, Renaissance jewelry of fascinating design and cloisonné boxes. This evening at our official welcome dinner, we dine with our favorite wine author, Brian Murdock who will introduce you to the Spanish wines and charm you with his love of all things Spain.

Day 2  No trip to Madrid is complete without visiting the Prado Museum.  Spend some time this morning among the Spanish greats; Goya and Velasquez and so many other great painters. Later we take a stroll along La Calle Preciados for local shopping and the Calle Serrano for the luxurious boutiques.

Day 3
We leave Madrid after breakfast and head south making a stop in the city of Toledo the former capital of Spain and at one time, the largest city in the country. From the bridge above the Tagus River, the view of old Toldeo is magnificent and is dominated by the Cathedral. We walk through the narrow streets, stopping occasionally for various sights.  Along the way we peer into a small shop that has several artisans creating gold and brass jewelry, plates, and even swords. The art itself is called Damasene and is actually the inlay of gold and silver threads in a grooved sheet of metal in Moorish patterns. We depart Toledo after lunch by high speed train and now you can settle in for a siesta as we make our way south to Andalucia.  We arrive in Malaga late in the evening.

Day 4 Málaga   This morning we set out on a nature hike to explore the natural park, which surrounds our hotel.   Keep your eyes open for botanicals and found objects that perhaps will become part of your very own Treasures of Spain and later incorporated into a jewelry creation. After lunch we will visit the Picasso Museum for more inspiration.  Málaga is a vibrant city whose main street is lined with flower stands and the Mediterranean is just a few yards away. This afternoon is our walking tour of the city.

Day 5 Sevilla   Connected by plazas fragrant with sweet orange blossoms, we tour Sevilla's Cathedral where we will see the Spanish Monarchy’s beautiful jewelry collection.  This afternoon is dedicated to shopping on one of the most famous streets in Spain, Calle Sierpe. We meet you after lunch and take you to the Museo Arqueológico where we’ll see works from the nearby Roman city of Italica and the ancient Carambolo gold jewelry collection from the sixth and seventh century B.C.!  Back to Málaga

Day 6  Today we visit the extraordinary Cueva de la Pileta a painted cave with numerous drawings. Most of them are lines or patterns, but there are also human figures and animals, painted in black, red and yellow. Probably the most exceptional drawing is called El Pez. Located in the deepest part of the cave the 1.50m long drawing shows a fish, which is interpreted as a flatfish (Pleuronectiformes), probably a European Flounder (Platichthys flesus L.). It has both eyes on one side of the body and the form of the fins is as true to life as possible.  Other forms in this cave include some of the oldest pieces of pottery and human bones ever found in Europe.

Day 7  Córdoba   Literally and figuratively one of Spain’s most colorful picprovinces alive with flamenco, incredibly whitewashed and bursting with flowers at every turn!  It is the fusion of cultures, the joining of past and present, East and West that was characteristic of Córdoba’s history and is instantly apparent today.  Artisan crafts of Córdoba are Arab influenced with delicate silver filigree work, for which the province is celebrated; Cordobés embossed polychrome leatherwork and hammered copper, bronze and brass are on our itinerary today!  Take it all in and see how much you can duplicate in your own creations.

Day 8  Typically the last day…Is a free day to do as you wish, but just in case you’d rather keep the momentum going we can recommend optional trips to Morocco… or Ubrique, a town in Spain known for leather; including shoes, bags, jackets… or just hang back at the manor house and take a great hike through the beautiful Montes de Málaga mountains.  Tonight we gather one more time at our farewell extravaganza to relive together one more time our very unique Spain Adventure!

Day 9  Departures after breakfast from Malaga.

Artist's Statement

“Being a rebel by nature and not one known for ‘coloring inside the lines,’ I innately want to go ‘out there’ with my art. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) launched me on a journey of self-indulgent (mis)behavior. The very nature of the medium implores a looseness of design and attitude that gives me the freedom to break all the rules and have a darn good time doing it!”
Originally a traditional silversmith, Linda Kline’s art took an abrupt turn when she discovered Precious Metal Clay. The versatile, organic nature of PCM allowed her to redefine her artistry and capture a look that had evaded her through traditional metal smith techniques.
Her fascination and expertise with metal clay artistry has earned her recognition as one of the foremost instructors in her field.  Linda holds certifications with PMC and Art Clay Silver, and is one of only 19 senior instructors in the United States.  She offers PMC certification, in addition to advanced technique and specialty classes from her home studio on tranquil Orchid Island, Florida, and at conferences and studios throughout the US and abroad.

Linda serves on the faculty of Vero Beach Museum of Art, Florida’s largest teaching museum.  She stars in Jewelry Television’s “Jewel School” instructional DVD series for metal clay artistry, and has published numerous articles for magazines and journals. She is a member of the Florida Society of Goldsmiths, PMC Guild, Society of North American Goldsmiths, Vero Beach Art Club, Vero Art Chix, and the Vero Beach Theatre Guild. Linda’s artistic passions and accomplishments extend to stage acting, fashion design and mixed media.  She was educated at the University of Central Florida and has studied jewelry design from renowned artists in the US and Mexico.

Our Accommodations
Madrid Hotel is located right in the center of town, near the museums, shopping and nightlife.

Our home base in the south is a beautiful manor house (casa rural) nestled in the Natural Park, Montes de Malaga.  Our host Juan Maria Luna will charm you with his warm hospitality and offer us the opportunity to learn about this Natural Park.
